Batik Explorations update for 2016

Welcome to my website! I am now able to run one day workshops at  'The Studio', Paulton Engine (9 miles south of Bath), as well as 6 week courses in the community across Somer Valley as a tutor for Bath College.

I am an artist and art educator and a passionate believer in unlocking the potential of every person that enrols on my courses.  I have been working alongside adults, young people and children for many years, both in and out of educational settings.  My gallery shows a selection of both adult and children batik pieces that show the fantastic range of creative ideas that can be produced in batik, mostly designed by complete beginners.

I am the Education Officer for the International Batik Guild (see website links).  Last April, my new purpose built studio was 'launched' by having the Batik Guild AGM held there for a 2 day weekend (see photos).

My courses over the last several years have been working through the media of Batik.  I will also be offering courses on Exploring Photography; Exploring Screen Printing; Exploring Drawing Through Training your Right Brain.

Since her first course in Bath in January about 4 years ago, where all the participants had to trudge through fresh thick snow to get there, to working in a studio in a field at an organic farm outside Bath on a cold February day (with outdoor compost loos), to a splendid Georgian setting as part of the Widcombe Art Trail in the spring where we received visitors from the large exhibition on the floor below, to look in on the workshop, to being invited to run workshops with an Indonesian theme at a preparatory school in Wells...

the years have 'flowed' by in a delightful trail of hot wax and creative minds and hands.   An ever growing number of inspired people finding their creativity and producing stunning first pieces to take home (see feedback pages on tabs to the left).

Shelagh blends the learning of the techniques and skills of this traditional craft, with the imagined possibilities of the each learner's individual creativity.

Whether you have ideas that you want to realise or are looking for inspiration, Batik Exploration will enable you to start where you are and will move you at your own pace, to be inspired.

Absolute beginners are very welcome as well as the more experienced.  You will receive all the attention that you feel that you need.

The Batik Exploration workshop will guide you through the unique process of learning to draw with hot wax, and using vibrant Procion dyes to complete your design.

Letting you:

‘Go with the flow’.

SATURDAY September 17th 2016

The Studio, Paulton Engine, Paulton BS39 7PF

Bookings now being taken!

Batik provides a wonderfully fluid and freeing drawing experience that encourages exploration, experimentation and your imagined possibilities.

For those who are new to the medium, you will quickly learn all that you need, to begin creating your own work.

Shelagh will demonstrate how to draw with wax using the traditional wax pen (tjanting) and start you off quickly, mastering the technique using small cotton samples.

When you feel ready, you will be offered options, depending on how you want to progress maybe creating pattern or working pictorially.

You will learn how to mix and apply dyes and will have the opportunity to use the techniques of resisting and crackling.

The course will include everything that you need to relax, feel comfortable, build confidence and skills and to lose yourself in own creativity.

I hope that you enjoy the experience.
